My goal is to humanize the map beyond the mere abstract and lifeless representation of the world by radically opening up to the inclusion of experiences and imaginations of people. I am particularly interested in understanding how children who have not yet had (much) topography lessons experience space, the borders in space, their movements in space, and the imaginations of the unknown. Creating an experience-map can, for instance, be done with migrant children, who could be asked to draw on their migration experiences. In addition to extra measures to create a safe(r) space, this may require special training in dealing with potential traumas that the drawing assignment may evoke. For this Maplab I have chosen to map the travel and border experience of a daily route of young children. Children spend most of their time at home or school. These are the places where most of the memories are created. But also where the first boundaries arise. Especially when it comes to the apparently mundane, routine spatial actions, much can be learned about the internal boundaries that have been learned, internalized, and normalized and the fantasies and dreams of and possible concerns about the world outside those learned boundaries. Are they allowed to go anywhere? And how do they depict the world beyond the bounds of the known? Is that a dreamland? Do dragons or other fantasy creatures live there?

The idea is that children make a map of the way from home to school. To this end, the children are first asked to draw what is present in the streetscape (roads, buildings, trees). Then, they are asked to indicate where they were allowed to go. Where are the boundaries? And lastly, they are asked to imagine and picture what could be behind these boundaries. What kind of world lies behind the known roads?

Removing Dust Covers is an installation aimed at people who can’t return to their homes. The title is a reference to the habit of people covering their furniture with dust covers before they leave their home for a long period of time, to preserve it while they are away. Not being able to revisit my childhood home means that this place only exists in my memory and that I will never be able to remove those dust covers.

In my work, I try to find out to what extent we can use today’s technology to reconstruct someone’s memories. Memories are locked inside the complexity of the brain and are to this day intangible to any other person than yourself. With my work, I try to make these memories tangible in such a way that I can invite people into my home. To do this I use computer-generated imagery to reconstruct and visualise parts of my memory and integrate that on a physical set that represents my childhood room. This space is the centre point of my memory of home, but it also potentially serves the viewer a key to their memory of home.

This project is a physical Data-visualisation of the population of Arnhem and it is based on the ingredients that is used by the residents of the city Arnhem. The data is derived from The demography in Arnhem from dutch to 39 other nationalities. The data gives a new insight on how to view the city Arnhem. based on what people use to cook!

A Redesign of the 10th and last issue of Aspen Magazine, The Asia issue. This book is represented in a form of one long scroll. The concept for this book was derived from the many beautiful scrolls that were described and explained in the issue. the redesign of this issue was a collaborative work between Wessel Pingen and me. A Motion screen designed for Demo Festival Amsterdam 2019.
Design in Motion Festival took place on 7 November 2019 at Amsterdam Central station. The first festival of its kind, DEMO Festival showcased the finest motion work by studios, designers, emerging talent and academies from around the world, for 24 hours on 80 digital screens throughout the station. Designing the screen started with a simple grid with (X,Y) axis coordinates. Than these coordinates were added and used in P5.js and opentype.js
